Comments

The last challenge of the year shows a lot of movement among the cadets. Recently there was a renewed interest in the game and many new jrobots were uploaded. The tactics of some of them are not very effective, but only through trials and errors an author can develop a strong jrobot. However, even during this challenge another novice achieved the requested percentages to be promoted among the veterans: NeoBot.

This year the story of JROBOTS passed through a series of several events.
At the beginnign of 2005, there was the Changing of the guard!: The trend showed an estabilished block of veterans and another block of cadets that were promoted one month and demoted the next one. During the next four months, JROBOTS prepared itself for the beginning of the sixth years of tournaments with Still two/one/zero to go and the sixth years begins!. The number of played matches decreased, so in April the cadets didn't reach a sufficient number of matches to get reliable results. The side effect was that the veterans were reduced to 12: The Wonderful Dozen!.
The May challenge showed a great struggle among the strongest jrobots ever created. Only 5 survived (Tango , IonStorm, Starkle, Headhunter, Mouth) and the 7 demoted became The Seven Samurai!: They were going to take their revenge among the cadets! Needless to say that in July the challenge was called The Seven Samurai Are Back!, but strangely they didn't create too much problems to the weak cadets.
On July, finally, a new interesting jrobot appeared and achieved a triple victory. It was StrangeMatter, so the August tournament was called Strangeness Matters!, and in September it would be called The Thirteen Warrior! because StrangeMatter joined the wonderful dozen, but unluckily the September challenge never took place because of one of the crisis that periodically hits JROBOTS. In fact the server that hosted the tournaments changed its policy and the results couldn't be memorized any more, so the September tournament was skipped and the October one became the First Official Off-line challenge!: It was played off-line on my computer only by cadets.
The crisis seemed to never find its end and the November challenge would be a boring Second Official Off-line challenge!, but fortunately, thanks to Frank, the provider of the great server that now manages the tournaments, it became Happy Days are Back Again! and the last tournament was called Stay Tuned for More Happy Days!. As I already said at the beginning, in the last months there was also a renewed interest in JROBOTS that brought new players. Let's see if the new year will bring further new and stronger jrobots. This is the JROBOTS' story so far.

Finally a few notes about the last challenge. Again a lot of new jrobots were uploaded when the contest was almost at the end, so they didn't reach the number of matches to have their results accepted. Among the newest only NeoBot was promoted with Leech, Touche, RauaRoobert, Stinger, ELECTRON, Yoda, NumeroOtto, Phalanx, MaudDib, Ciaky, FlameBall, Bizarro, StrangeMatter, Hellfire. Other 3 were removed instead: Neo (the little brother of NeoBot), RobotripII and Banny. So the survivors are Satellite, Shank, Sprate, Cranage, DirkGently, GiovyVbis, DarkDestroyerV04, AlessioV3, Ajax, DarkDestroyer. To end the list, there are also Jwpazz2, ZBot, Jwpazz, Jerobot, Ro1, Ro with no rating because of the low number of played matches.

The veterans' league shows a surprising result: Tango was defeated in team mode by IonStorm. It is a lucky result (for IonStorm) because it was not updated recently. Anyway the triple victories sequence of Tango was stopped again.
There are a lot of survivors among the veterans. This is surprising too because usually there are less than 17 survivors. They are: Jimbo, Berserk, 845bytes, Bosozoku, GulleFjun, Teddybear, Shrike, Mouth, KillerBees, RoboOlm, Bohan, Stately, DOOM, Headhunter, IonStorm, Starkle, Tango.
The veterans demoted are Platoon, Shark, Vampire, DarkSoldier, MarukoV4, DeadDuck, Snutteplutt, DirtyCoward, Ladybug, Dragon, Kraft, Janeway, CounterStrike.

At the beginning of this month, Frank provided a brand-new server for the JROBOTS on-line tournaments and, finally, a new challenge could take place. Thank you very much, Frank! We can loudly say that happy days are back again!
Thanks to this new server, there was also a renewed interest in JROBOTS contests, in fact 12 (I say 12!) new jrobots were uploaded to the arena. In the past months only a maximum of one or two new jrobots appeared at once during a tournament, so I hope that now new strong competitors can challenge the long-aged veterans.
Unfortunately, the new jrobots were uploaded when the contest was almost at the end, so they didn't collected enough matches, but can show their real value in the next competition. Anyway there is the exception of GiovyT and Ladybug. The former was a first attempt and didn't reach the requested percentage to survive, while the latter was surprisingly good and was promoted!

For what regards the veterans, there are bad news for ELECTRON, Yoda, Hellfire and StrangeMatter. These jrobots were posted during the last off-line challenges and performed quite well among cadets, but it seems that the last contest was very hard among veterans and only eleven jrobots survived. They are: Tango (another triple victory), IonStorm, Starkle, Headhunter, Stately, DOOM, Mouth and, survived thanks to only one category, Bohan, KillerBees, RoboOlm and GulleFjun. So the veterans' dirty dozen lost a component.
ELECTRON, Yoda, Hellfire and StrangeMatter apart, also Bizarro and FlameBall failed to reach the requested percentages.

On the cadets' side, we already cited the appearance of 12 new jrobots. They are: Shank, RobotripII, NeoBot, Neo, Satellite, Carnage, DirkGently, Banny, GiovyT, GiovyVbis and Ladybug. GiovyT was removed, but a replacement already exists in GiovyVbis that survived, while Ladybug deserved a promotion. We'll see its value among the veterans during the next challenge. All the other components of this cadets' dirty dozen played too few matches and didn't reach the fourth of total matches limit to consider their results valid. Togheter with RauaRoobert, they will try again their chances in December.
To summarize, Shank, RobotripII, NeoBot, Neo, Satellite, Carnage, DirkGently, Banny, RauaRoobert didn't reach the requested number of matches and stay in the arena; GiovyT was removed; Leech, Touche, Ajax, Sprate, GiovyVbis, Phalanx, NumeroOtto, Stinger, Ciaky, MaudDib survived; finally, Shark, DarkSoldier, 845bytes, Platoon, Kraft, DirtyCoward, Berserk, MarukoV4, Vampire, Snutteplutt, Ladybug, Jimbo, Bosozoku, Dragon, DeadDuck, Shrike, Teddybear, CounterStrike, Janeway were promoted. Thirty jrobots at a time: The veterans' league is going to be very crowded.
Particularly relevant results are those of: CounterStrike and Janeway in single mode, Teddybear in double mode and Berserk in team mode. A special mention again to Ladybug as the best novice.

So the first off-line challenge came to an end. This new kind of tournament was forced by the new policy of SourceForge about server-side scripts.
I think that to focus the matches on updated jrobots was a good idea. In fact, as you can see, only updated jrobots were effectively promoted, first of all because they reach the requested percentages, but no other was, even if some achieved better results. Let's see if this new rule will increase the jrobots improvements.
Among the three updated jrobots, Hellfire, Yoda and ELECTRON, the best is Hellfire. It achieved good percentages in all the three categories. Yoda and ELECTRON got specular results: Yoda is better in single mode, but its behavior in team mode is very poor. ELECTRON is more regular instead.
If any updates will be sent, we'll see if these jrobots really deserve the Veterans' League.
Finally, there are bad news for Morpheus, Lazi, and Rook. They haven't reached the requested percentages to survive. That is not surprising for Rook because it was the same Rook included in the SDK. Now that jrobots are sent by email this kind of nice jokes finally comes to an end.

Finally a new strong competitor appeared among the veterans: StrangeMatter! With its 59%-60%-38% percentages achieved a place around the 8^th position in all the categories. Not very high percentages, but its performances are regular in the three modes and better than those of long aged veterans. Its results should guarantee a long permanence in the veterans' league but... unfortunately this month the number of matches played in the cadets' league was too low and no one was promoted. This means that the competition will be very hard among the fourteen jrobots that survived: Another challenge for StrangeMatter, the thirteenth warrior (13 because the performance of Bizarro are not convincing yet).
Now let's talk about the other veterans: Tango got another triple victory with 10% more than IonStorm in all the three categories. At the same time IonStorm is the second best jrobot with 20% more than Starkle, the third best jrobots, in team mode.
The complete list of survivors is the following: GulleFjun, RoboOlm, Bizarro, Mouth, FlameBall, Bohan, StrangeMatter, KillerBees, Stately, DOOM, Headhunter, Starkle, IonStorm, Tango.

During this challenge four new jrobots appeared among the cadets to be promoted. These new jrobots are Sprate, RauaRoobert, 845bytes and StrangeMatter. The most interesting among those are StrangeMatter and 845bytes. The first achieved a triple victory, so we can expect good results among the veterans too. The latter should be a jrobot already appeared in 2002 and it is very surprising that with so a small memory footprint it could achieve the percentages for promotion at least in one category. Sprate and RauaRoobert were weaker and failed to be promoted, but some improvements could help them to gain better results.

The epilog of the June challenge is quite unexpected. The Seven Samurai, the long aged veterans demoted in the past challenge, didn't accomplish their task. Their effect among the weak cadets had to be catastrophic but instead only one jrobot, OneEyeW, didn't reach the requested percentages to survive. Probably this means that even seven strong jrobots are not enough to make the percentages fall below 25% for a large number of cadets. Anyway an expected effect is the following: Only the Seven Samurai succeeded in being promoted. In particular DOOM won both the single and double categories and confirmed itself as a very good jrobot.
So the results of the cadets' league are the following. Promoted jrobots: GulleFjun, RoboOlm, FlameBall, Bohan, KillerBees, Stately and DOOM. Survived jrobots: Morpheus, Leech, Touche, Ajax, Platoon, NumeroOtto, Phalanx, MaudDib and DLVer1. Removed jrobots: OneEyeW. A new uploaded jrobot, 845bytes, didn't reach the requested number of matches to be promoted. Well, I said that 845bytes is a new jrobot, but I think that in reality it is a new appearance of an old jrobot of 2002. Let's see if it is going to perform better now.

On the veterans' side, a lot of jrobots, that usually are demoted every two challenges, survived the contest. The fall of the Seven Samurai made the veterans' competition less difficult. So only Stinger, Ciaky, Shark, Vampire, MarukoV4, DirtyCoward, ELECTRON and DeadDuck were demoted, while Berserk, Kraft, Jimbo, Snutteplutt, DarkSoldier, Dragon, Shrike, Bosozoku, Janeway, CounterStrike, Bizarro, Mouth, Teddybear, Headhunter, IonStorm, Starkle and Tango (the latter performed another triple victory) will fight again in the veterans' league. The challenge of May brings bad news for a lot of veterans: The wonderful dozen is reduced now to five jrobots! In fact only five of the old aged veterans reached the requested percentages to survive. The current strongest jrobots in the arena are: Tango (another triple victory), IonStorm, Starkle, (very good results just after Tango) and to complete the group Headhunter and Mouth.
This means that DOOM, Stately, Bohan, KillerBees (again!), FlameBall, RoboOlm and GulleFjun suffer the shame to fall among the cadets. Anyway the next challenge is going to be a good occasion to remove some of the weakest jrobots from the arena. With seven opponents like those, from now on called the "seven samurai", a lot of jrobots, that manage to survive for only a few percents, risk to be removed.

On the cadets' side, this time a sufficient number of matches were played. A large number of jrobots were promoted: they are very lucky to leave the cadets' league when the seven samurai are arriving. To avoid the contest Rob1 and MasterKormaz2 decided to be removed already during this challenge, so only Morpheus, Leech, Touche, Phalanx, OneEyeW, Ajax, NumeroOtto, DLVer1, Platoon and MaudDib are going to face the matches.
The lucky one are: Stinger, DirtyCoward, Shark, Ciaky, Berserk, Kraft, Vampire, Snutteplutt, Jimbo, MarukoV4, DarkSoldier, ELECTRON, DeadDuck, Shrike, Bizarro, Bosozoku, Dragon, CounterStrike, Janeway and Teddybear. They will live for a month among the veterans, while a few of them, Janeway and Teddybear, possibly more.

During this challenge we saw a great fight among veterans but at the same time a poor one among cadets. In fact the number of matches in the cadets' league is so low that I can't ratify their results. So the cadets promotions skip a turn.

On the veterans' side instead there was a great struggle and the wondeful dozen confirmed its value. The next challenge is going to show a very hard figth to survive. Some of the long aged veteran will fail for sure and they'll be demoted to cadets: Let's see which of them will suffer such a degradation.

The wonderful dozen is so composed: Tango, Starkle, IonStorm, Headhunter, Stately, DOOM, Bohan, KillerBees, Mouth, GulleFjun, FlameBall and RoboOlm. The last three survived only for their good results in Team mode, but I don't think that results are going to be enough to survive during the next challenge.

Veteran's demoted were: Bizarro, Teddybear, Janeway, Shrike, CounterStrike, Bosozoku, Kraft, Jimbo, Berserk, MaudDib, Stinger and Platoon. The cadets' league will be very crowded: The best ones will win a place among the Veterans!

Finally the long wait for the beginning of the sixth year of JROBOTS challanges came to an end. In fact the first official contest among bots written in the Java language took place in the far April 2000, so the current challenge completed the first five years. The last tournaments didn't show much movement among the veterans or the cadets. There are more or less the same cadets bouncing from one league to the other and the same strong jrobots that confirm as veterans. Let's see if the sixth year is going to bring new authors and new ideas to revive the competiton and stimulate the active players.

During this challenge again 14 jrobots confirmed themselves as veterans. They are: Tango, Starkle, IonStorm, Headhunter, DOOM, Stately, Bohan, KillerBees, Mouth, RoboOlm, Bizarro, FlameBall, GulleFjun and Bosozoku.
An usual amount of jrobots were demoted: Ciaky, Shark, DLVer1, ELECTRON, Vampire, Touche, MarukoV4, Dragon, DirtyCoward, Snutteplutt, DeadDuck, and, for only a few tenth, also DarkSoldier.

Among the cadets, the changing of the guard shows the promotion of: Janeway, Shrike, Teddybear, Jimbo, Counterstrike, Berserk, MaudDib, Kraft, Stinger and Platoon. Only one jrobot was removed from the arena because of its poor performances: CounterStrike2, while Morpheus, Leech, MasterKormaz2, Ajax, OneEyeW, NumeroOtto and Phalanx survived.

The number of matches played by the cadets was quite low and this can explain some odd results, for example Edge and Joobot4000 were removed from the arena because they didn't reach the requested percentages to survive. They usually got the needed victories, but now they didn't succeed probably for bad luck.
Other changes in the arena, usual changing of the guard apart, are the demotion of Teddybear and MuadDib from veterans back to cadets, while DLVer1 was promoted to veteran, probably for good luck. Finally Bosozoku and RoboOlm succeeded in surviving the close competition of old aged veterans.

So now the survivors among the veterans are 14... their number grows. They are: GulleFjun, Bosozoku, FlameBall, RoboOlm, Bizarro, KillerBees, Mouth, Bohan, Stately, DOOM, Headhunter, IonStorm, Starkle and Tango.
Jrobots demoted are instead Morpheus, Platoon, Leech, MaudDib, Jimbo, Berserk, Kraft, Counterstrike, Shrike, Janeway and Teddybear.

The 12 cadets promoted are Touche, Shark, DirtyCoward, Ciaky, DLVer1, ELECTRON, Vampire, MarukoV4, Snutteplutt, DarkSoldier, DeadDuck, Dragon.
Are still cadets: OneEyeW, MasterKormaz2, CounterStrike2, Stinger, Phalanx, NumeroOtto.
Finally, Edge and Joobot4000 were removed. Goodbye, Edge and Joobot4000!
